picks and pickles

So I finished the book long long ago. Is everyone else there now? I found myself finishing the book really fast. Because it was an easy read and because I thought it was pretty entertaining. However, I kind of thought it was the poor man's Steel Magnolias. I mean, it kind of started to bug me as the book went on. Why didn't someone punch Agnes T. Ritter in the face. I don't care if she's a "pickle." She sure didn't act like one. Grrr.

I also found myself wondering about our main character Queenie. It seemed like she and her husband had plenty of money (at least considering) and I wondered how that was possible with farming the way it was. Anyone know? Did it ever explain why they were so much better off than most? Maybe I just missed it.

Well, I think that since I am the last alphabetically to choose, it is Amy's turn! Welcome, and let us know what the book for May is. Meanwhile, we can keep commenting on the pickle club.

Silly Randy, Amy already picked the next book, see the post right below your post. :)
Good question about Queenie's financial situation. It was never explained.
I had a hard time keeping remembering who was who. There were a lot of women in the group and I could never keep them straight.
Spoiler Alert!!! So did Queenie actually kill the guy?

oh my gosh! I did spell your name with a "y". I totally gasped when I read that because that is such a bad mistake on my part. I am deeply sorry. You are totally not a Randy with a "y". You are definitely a Randi with an "i".

So I sat down to read the book the other evening and was liking it just fine. Then I decided to go to sleep and I didn't pick it up again for a while until last night and somehow I fell asleep {spoiler alert} the page before they found that guy's dead body. I'm still reading, but it's very fun and I think I'll go spend some time reading it now.

I did have a thought at the very beginning about the history and changes of farming in America. In this book it kind of portrays farming as the worst thing you could be doing during the depression, but previously I had the impression that owning and working land is one of the biggest things that pulled people through the depression. Thoughts?

I also wondered if The Depression had an impact on the prestige of farming in America and if that is when the idea of corporate farming came in to play. Thoughts?

Has anyone seen Food, Inc. besides me? It mildly points out how drastically farming has changed in America just in the last 50 years.

PS Cami - For some reasoned I laughed out loud when I read "spoiler alert" and I couldn't wait to type it myself. Also, I couldn't help but read the spoiler alert, so it didn't work for me, but I suspect her anyway.

Just finished the little pickle book and I liked it! I do agree with the wannabe 'Steel Magnolias' comments. I did like the friendship aspects of the novel, it made me realize how important friends are and how much I love you girls!
