Just finished Skipping Christmas.
And, as usual, it did not let me down.
How are the rest of you doing on it?

Cami (you're up next, right?), what are we reading in Jan.?
Can't wait to start the next book.

Christmas

Hey, we will all be around at Christmas right? I know that Jenny Weed's reception will be a perfect time to say hi, but Gracie is getting blessed in the Mariposa branch the next day at 10 am if any of you want to come. At any rate, if anyone can come up to my parents that day, it would be cool to have a like a big lunch or dinner and talk and hang out and laugh and be friends. The date is Sunday, December 28. I'm so excited to see everyone!

December Book

Hooray for December! I've waiting all year for this month!
Let's read Skipping Christmas by John Grisham.

It's short (which is nice because I have about a billion things to do this month) & always gets me into the Christmas mood. Happy reading! And...Merry Christmas! (seriously I've been waiting all year to say that).

ummm

I still have about 250 pages to go.
Man, this book has a lot of pages...and teeny tiny print too.
But...I've gotta say, I'm really liking it.
Meg just got married. I love weddings.

Hey Camille, did you chop off your finger?

I'm up to page 43.

I totally have the same problem with the book and the movie. I can't help but imagine the same characters in my head. It's not bothering me though.

I like the book so far, although Laurie seems too proper - again, comparing the book to the movie.

I really liked it when she wrote about the girls' routine in the morning before they left for the day and the last part of the routine was the girls looking back to their mother before turning the corner. "Somehow it seemed as if they couldn't have got through the day without that, for whatever their mood might be, the last glimpse of that motherly face was sure to affect them like sunshine."

I guess I like that part because I want to be the mom who affects her children like sunshine. I'm also super excited for Anjanette to be growing a baby inside of her right now. I can't wait to make promises about hand crafted baby things that it will take me not long to do, but years to actually get in the mail to you AJ. Jenny? Randi? Can I get a witness?

I love you all. I'm enjoying the book. More later.

Weird words

Ok, so because I was an English major, I have always hated comparing books to the movies that are made from them. However, it is almost impossible not to do it, especially with a movie like this that I have seen so many times. I am on page 35 of this book and so far, I like the movie a lot better. The book is going slower, which is to be expected since the movie can only be so long. But I have noticed a few things.

I think that the relationship between the sisters is a little unrealistic in the book. I know I am not that far into yet, but it seems like there is a definite lack of any sort of tension. For example, in the movie when Jo accidentally burns Meg's hair, Meg gets really upset at Jo and even blames her a little. In the book, Meg is upset, but she just sort of writes it off. And what is even more strange about it to me is that in the book Jo burns off a lot of her hair instead of just one lock. So I think that even sisters who love each other as much as these do, there would still be a little tension every once in a while, no?

I know that this book was written back in the "olden days" but there a lot of words in here that are totally strange to me and I have no idea what they mean. When Jo meets Laurie at the Gardiner's party he says, "I hate [college]! Nothing but grinding or skylarking." Uhhh, WTC. What is that? It sounds like something a gay skateboarder would do. And there have been other words that I wish I would have marked that I just don't know. I guess I need an 1800's dictionary around when I read this.

I think that's it for now except that the character of Jo kind of bugs me. She wants to be a boy so bad, but she's still all dainty and cares about "being proper." Make up your mind, sister.

Has Anyone Started This Yet?

http://elefand.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/little-women.jpg
Just wondering.
Cause I haven't. I haven't even been to the bookstore yet to get it...but I'm really really hoping I can find a cover that looks like this. It's so old school, I love it! Although, I can't get over their horrible hair & totally unflattering dresses. Aren't you glad we've gotten better at the whole fashion thing? I sure am.
PS. I am planning on starting the book this weekend.
I hope I don't hate Amy in the book as much as I hated her in the movie.
