Weird words

Ok, so because I was an English major, I have always hated comparing books to the movies that are made from them. However, it is almost impossible not to do it, especially with a movie like this that I have seen so many times. I am on page 35 of this book and so far, I like the movie a lot better. The book is going slower, which is to be expected since the movie can only be so long. But I have noticed a few things.

I think that the relationship between the sisters is a little unrealistic in the book. I know I am not that far into yet, but it seems like there is a definite lack of any sort of tension. For example, in the movie when Jo accidentally burns Meg's hair, Meg gets really upset at Jo and even blames her a little. In the book, Meg is upset, but she just sort of writes it off. And what is even more strange about it to me is that in the book Jo burns off a lot of her hair instead of just one lock. So I think that even sisters who love each other as much as these do, there would still be a little tension every once in a while, no?

I know that this book was written back in the "olden days" but there a lot of words in here that are totally strange to me and I have no idea what they mean. When Jo meets Laurie at the Gardiner's party he says, "I hate [college]! Nothing but grinding or skylarking." Uhhh, WTC. What is that? It sounds like something a gay skateboarder would do. And there have been other words that I wish I would have marked that I just don't know. I guess I need an 1800's dictionary around when I read this.

I think that's it for now except that the character of Jo kind of bugs me. She wants to be a boy so bad, but she's still all dainty and cares about "being proper." Make up your mind, sister.
