So I don't know if any of you are still reading and if you read this month, but I LOVED this book. I had never read it and I just finished it for my English class. In fact, I loved it so much, I am writing my final paper about it.
Steinbeck has an amazing way of describing the landscape of the great country we live in. All of his words in this book are so beautiful.
When he visits Wisconsin, Steinbeck describes it like this,
"When I saw it for the first and only time in early October, the air was rich with butter-colored sunlight, not fuzzy but crisp and clear so that every frost-gay tree was set off, the rising hills were not compounded, but alone and separate. I remember now that that I had been told Wisconsin is a lovely state, but the telling had not prepared me. It was a magic day. The land dripped with richness, the fat cows and pigs gleaming against green, and, in the smaller holdings, corn standing in little tents as corn should, and pumpkins all about."

Wonderful.
And, when he describes the redwoods and Northern California. This book stole my heart.
It was fantastic.

I'm the worst book club member ever. I never even tried to read this book. Just know that if we actually met in a physical place all together, I would bring really delicious food to share. And even if I hadn't read the book, I'm sure I would still have something to say.
I'm pretty sure we've all been that lately Camille. Well, I can for sure speak for myself on that one. I don't even know where March went! So my questions is...what do we want to do for April? It's my month right? Do we want to keep this book for another month or should I choose a new one? I have one in mind but I wasn't sure what everyone was thinking. I'm sure it will be a crazy month for Deb! :) and I think most of you girls are traveling for the wedding. So...your thoughts?
My delayed response is keep it for April and we'll pick up again in May. But I started the book today and LOVE it. This might be his best.
Hi Gals!! I'm just about finished with the book and for some reason it was hard for me to get into because of the lack of plot/characters. But that being said, one of my favorite things about Steinbeck is that he describes people, communities and situations SO well. He makes you feel like you're there because he describes them so well. I love how he describes the church congregations and the small town diners and such. I honestly feel more connected to the way he describes things than any other author. All in all I liked the book so great choice Randi! It was SOOO fun seeing you all at the wedding. Thank you 100 times over for all your efforts to be there. I'm excited for Amy's pick for May!
